Heart, ok defibrillator with resonance – The Time

is also available in Italy a new and more effective biventricular defibrillator implanted subcutaneously. It serves to treat heart failure and is compatible with magnetic resonance imaging in the whole body. With this new technology, developed by Medtronic, they were made the first plants in Lazio at the Hospital U.K. Fats of Ostia and the Casilino Hospital of Rome.

In the world are affected more than 22 million people, with an incidence of 2 million cases a year. Only in Italy, patients are 747,000. It is of heart failure, the condition for which the heart is unable to adequately perform its pumping function, resulting in the accumulation of liquids in the lower limbs, lungs, and other tissues. Patients with this disease have a very compromised life expectancy if not properly treated. Heart failure is responsible for 1-2% of total expenditure on health care.

This expense could be reduced thanks to the new system for cardiac resynchronization, now available and can be used in approximately 20% of patients with heart failure, which increases response to therapy and thus reduce direct and indirect costs of patients. “We have successfully carried out the installation of this new biventricular defibrillator in a patient aged 55 with dilated cardiomyopathy and ejection fraction depressed. Despite the implantable cardiac devices are less invasive and easy to apply, there is still a proportion of patients who fail to fully benefit from therapy with biventricular defibrillator – says Professor Fabrizio Ammirati, Director of the Cardiology Grassi Ostia – up to date, the doctor had to seek with difficulty because of this lack of response by manually editing the various parameters of the implanted device. With the technology now used the stimulation parameters are instead automatically and constantly adjusted based on the patient’s condition. ”

The big challenge accepted by this technological innovation is to maximize the number of patients receiving the full benefits of cardiac resynchronization therapy, as defined in the ‘Expert Consensus Statement on CRT EHRA / HRS (international recommendations on the treatment of patients with heart failure). The second novelty affects patients with an implantable medical device, that can undergo the examination of magnetic resonance of all the districts of the body, even with new technology at 3 Tesla magnetic field for complex diagnostic areas.

“It is estimated that 40% of patients with cardiac defibrillator must submit, within four years from the plant, in a survey of MRI, clinical examination essential for the proper diagnosis of many diseases – adds Dr. Leonardo Calo, Head of the Cardiology Casilino Polyclinic of Rome – Compared to previous defibrillators, the new technology allows the patient to access these investigations and, therefore, allows you to make a proper diagnosis of any conditions potentially lethal pathological. ” Therapy with biventricular device has proved effective in reducing mortality and hospitalizations for heart failure.
