The Italian internet architecture is becoming a bit ‘more adult, as evidenced by the effort to create a network of interchanges data nationwide. With us is nothing new, but it takes some time in other major European cities. Today was marked the most important step in this direction: in Pioltello, near Milan, on an area of 30,000 square meters, was born Internet Park, the first data center entirely neutral with respect to the world of IT and telecommunications operators.

It is a structure of WholeData, company specializes born in 2014, and can accommodate up to 10 thousand square meters of data rooms. The actual operation is planned for next spring, but already there is the adhesion of the mix, the Milan Internet Exchange, the historic node national internet in rooms where data travels 300 gigabits per second of Web traffic.
Mix WholeData chose to replicate the node via Caldera, which is the cradle of the Internet business Italian (in terms of infrastructure).

Replicate the node, ie “ridondarlo” (as they say in technical terms) is just a step towards the realization of a first network of nodes on which to pass the Italian Internet traffic, thus ensuring better reliability and continuity of service. We risk not finding internet services inaccessible, in short, thanks to infrastructure redundancy. The Mix has chosen WholeData because of its characteristics of neutrality: the data center is open to all and not headed by any operator or actor IT.

“Wholedata is only a first step: within a year and a half-year we expect to have redundant nodes in a widespread manner in the Milan area,” says the Sole24Ore Joy Marino, president of the Mix. “Today we are only at the Caldera, while others Interchange Europeans-for example in London-are commonly redundant in several places. Wholedata can be considered the first substantive point of redundancy that we activate. We had launched another, with Telecity, but never took off effectively. Wholedata with our ambitions are higher: ridonderemo all traffic in the mix, “he adds. “In a year we will also be in the datacenter Supernap, in Pavia,” he adds. Work started in October is an investment of 300 million euro of Supernap International partnerships between Switch and Supernap Acdc Fund, attended by Orascom TMT Investments, Egyptian entrepreneur Naguib Sawiris and Accelero Capital.

This data center will be larger than that of Wholedata: in an area of 100,000 square meters, will have an area of 42,000 square meters and will be designed based on the most advanced technology, multi-tenant, Tier IV ( maximum reliability). The first Tier IV data center arrived in Italy only in 2015, with Fastweb.

It is also to Tier IV Wholedata, which in addition is the first data center in the Italy and third in Europe – to have requested certification of sustainability Leed Green Building with target Platinum. WholeData will use new technologies to ensure a free cooling coefficient PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) up to 1.25 (a good level, although the best international standards are higher: Google is at the level of 1.12, then the energy wasted is lower; ideally, a Pue equal to 1 would mean that all the energy is used without waste).

“The main objective of WholeData is to offer, with an Italian project, a campus new generation technology that ensures continuity and security to IT systems and networks of its customers. In addition, our project is really open to all, because it takes a position of complete neutrality with respect to the areas of connectivity and dell’Infomation Technology, consists of Carrier, Internet Service Providers, System Integrators and Cloud Providers, “said Cristiano Zanforlin, Managing Director of WholeData.

“With this project, 100% Italian, we are laying the foundation for a new national Internet hub operated by those addresses neither of networks or IT: we want to provide space customizable technical and neutral Telco operators and companies, for their IT systems. All this in a situation of maximum efficiency and high physical security, “said Zanforlin. “We believe that the specific skills of WholeData, combined with deep knowledge of the Internet ecosystem Italian, Park can make the Internet a business accelerator for the entire industry.”

The Internet Park project has been developed, by choice of WholeData, coordinating a team composed by the most senior engineering company specialized in the creation of data centers. The master plan and the architectural design were developed in collaboration with IN-SITE planning & amp; building, a company specializing in the governance of complex operational processes pertaining to the construction of the data center. The plant concept and the subsequent final design was developed by the Italian group Deerns, engineering company and consultancy in 12 countries with 23 offices and has developed Data Center with a total capacity of 1000MW IT including 300 MW with PUE less than 1 2.
