Cork, open pavilion: 30 new inmates arrive – Il Tirreno

LIVORNO. With spring, waves of novelty also to Sughere: after years of controversy, delays and an investigation to the prosecutor of Rome, the new Hall of Sughere finally opened its doors. In recent days, came the first inmates of “high security”, those, namely, who have committed serious crimes such as those related to the Mafia. It is all men arrived mainly from Sicily, Campania and Abruzzo. At first, it seemed that some inmates of high security not reach agreement in the city even from Prato, the project then faded because the people in question are following courses of study.

Once in groups, prisoners were accommodated, as well as provide for the settlement, in single cells, equipped with various amenities like private showers, plasma TV, power sockets, steel kitchenettes, hairdryer and so on, besides the canonical furnishings as a table and stools. In the coming weeks, is expected to arrive from other inmates, for a total of 100-120 people.

The structure is organized into three floors, each of which houses 27 cells. Also present were the infirmary and kitchen, although it is not yet open because there were problems. For the moment, then, the food is sent to the new pavilion from the old kitchen, where meals are prepared for the entire body of the detainees, which amounts to about 150 people.

In service in the new pavilion there are currently thirty prison police, coordinated by the new commander, Chief Commissioner Mark Garghella (replaced in recent months the previous year, Morgana Fantozzi). When the pavilion will be fully operational – supposedly by the end of this month – the servants employed within the new structure will be about twice, then sixty. A number of concern in the trade unions. I emphasize the representatives of the UIL Penitentiary: “We are perplexed because we fear that the number of our staff is not sufficient to meet the needs of the new pavilion. The number of detainees is likely to increase and this could create problems in staff turnover – explain the UIL Penitentiary – In fact, it is now possible to work six hours with four rounds, when you are in an emergency situation gets complicated and you are forced to do three eight-hour shifts, with a huge sacrifice for the staff. How UIL will monitor the situation to ensure that both the staff to pay reasonable choices by the administration. “
