The last of the series, in terms of initiatives that have the object and purpose of the ‘ digital literacy of students, Apple has signed. It is open to all children from six years of age, is free and will take place in all of the Apple Store, including 16 in Italy, Thursday, December 10, during the week dedicated to teaching science. What is it exactly? Of free workshops organized as part of the “Hour of Code”, a campaign launched in 2013 by Code.org facing tens of millions of students and designed to show that anyone can learn the basics of coding and learn the basics of programming software.

Minecraft enters the classroom to teach
Bringing new technologies and laboratories coding in Italian schools is also the goal that saw off Microsoft in the field alongside the Ministry of Education. During EDU Day was held Tuesday in Rome, an event that involved more than 600 students, teachers and school administrators from all over Italy, were shared needs and best practices to make the best educational activity with the help of new technologies. All under the hat of the National Plan for the digital school (PNSD), the document in charge to lead educational institutions on a path of innovation as foreseen in the reform of the “Good School”.

The scene in which it appears this project has been effectively summarized by CEO of Microsoft, Charles Purassanta, noting that in Italy there are now about 25 computers each 100 students (according to OECD data) and stressing the ‘paucity of such data in relation to the fact that “kids today are the first true digital natives and need tools and methodologies of learning close to their way of being and interacting.” The study of information technology and the introduction of digital technologies in the classroom are therefore a kind of passage and for Microsoft this “new model” of learning is based on several pillars. One of these is the coding.

With the project “Program Future”, which sees also active Cini, the Interuniversity Consortium for Informatics, has already been taught the code 309mila over 16,500 students in classes during the school year 2014-15. As for teachers, however, they are long gone a plan ad hoc training on digital tools for teachers and school leaders and the program Microsoft Innovative Educator, who selected today in Italy 42 educators “cutting edge” to create a community (globally) dedicated to cultivate innovation in the education system.

Among the schools become role models for the use of mobile devices and cloud solutions (such as the State Comprehensive School Baccio Montelupo Fiorentino) and sessions of evangelization technology in schools held directly by employees of the multinational, the latest is called Minecraft, one of the video games for PC more sold in the world. That by pure entertainment tool can become a very valuable support for learning the principles of mathematics and to stimulate creativity, the ability to solve problems and to work in a team.

Strengthen the luggage digital students
It is called” Computing and Digital Literacy: Call for a Holistic Approach “and the position paper presented recently at the European Parliament in Brussels by the ECDL Foundation, the ‘ body managing the European Computer Driving Licence, and that in Italy is represented by AICA. Why does this document? To take stock of the different approaches to the teaching of digital skills in school and reaffirm the notion that students need not only digital skills cross (called “e-skills”) but also the teaching of concepts and practices such as coding and the problem solving.

Digital Literacy, in short, is only the first step. And it is only the hat of a series of activities which are complementary. The plan at Community does not relate to the case on the need to experiment with programming and to touch other elements of computing compared to a twofold objective: to prepare students for a career in ICT or other professions that require the use of technology digital.
