Prisma, the amazing photographic app that turns you into a work of art – Bergamo Post

The normal pictures are not enough. The thirst for images of the company is inexhaustible and now the filters of Instagram or Facebook emoticons do not go out of fashion. He wanted a breath of fresh air and someone seems to have found the solution: Prisma, the application that turns your photos into works of art of various styles, inspired by famous artists and paintings. It was launched in June of iOS, which was an immediate success, so landing on Android in July. The hype was such that many have thought, during the period when the app was not yet in the Play Store, to create some bad copies overflowing with advertising or with viruses. In these last days of August, to Forbes has spoken of 55 million downloads. We noticed that the Papu Gomez uses it? But every phenomenon of this size always brings with it some small controversy: they have felt different about Prisma, immoderate use of data traffic, and access to personal data of users, up to the “long” waiting time for change the photos. In recent days, however, it seems to be coming a solution to these problems.

An artificial intelligence. But from the beginning: Prisma is not like any filter, which changes automatically the parameters of the photographs. If it were, there would be all this fuss. As has been written on the New York Times : “The app takes a picture, the junk and turns it into something new. The result looks like something created by an artist with a brush on canvas rather than a photo. ” The chief executive of Prisma Labs, the Russian Alexey Moiseenkov, explained that they do not use filters to be applied over the image. The app repaints again a new and original, based on the outline of the picture that is inserted. A system based on artificial intelligence, say similar to the deep dream of Google, which has been trained to emulate different artistic styles.

How is used. In favor of the app is definitely the really simple and intuitive interface. You enter a photo from your gallery or shooting directly with Prisma and then the only thing to do is to choose what style best suited to the shooting. The choice may take several minutes, because it is not easy to decide. In its first version, the photos are sent to the company’s servers that elaborate the content and send it back in a few seconds. All this material is deleted from the server the next day, in the words of Moiseenkov. Once changed, the picture can be directly published on social or saved in the gallery. You can leave the Prisma brand in the bottom right, or remove it from the settings. The app is free of charge and free of advertising; Moiseenkov explained that their revenues come and will come from collaborations with big brands that have their custom filter from those available, for a certain period.

Problems and solutions. competition is always poisonous. Semi-quote a famous film by David Fincher: “You do not make 50 million friends (in this case, users) without getting a few enemies.” And so it soon appeared the first criticism of Prisma: “How much internet traffic consumes? What a time to rework? “. In fact, the expectations were not exactly short and would often have to try again because the servers were clogged. But those of Prisma Labs immediately ran for cover and a few days has been prepared an improvement, for now only on iOS. Now about half of artistic styles are also available without the support of online servers; the developers claim that in this way the waiting time will be reduced to about 5 seconds, on an iPhone 6S. But the speed of course also depends on the power of the smartphone; older ones will ask a few seconds longer. Along with the times, they should be resolved in this way two other problems: the excessive use of internet data and the other, a bit ‘paranoid, tied to privacy. As mentioned, the photos remain on the prism server for about 24 hours; Now, with the offline version, the question should not arise. But from what I can understand, not all filters are available without the use of the server. And for Android the improvement is still absent. We’ll see.

incoming news. The developers still are not limited to plug the leaks, revived in a big way. A month ago they announced to Bloomberg that soon the wonders of Prisma will also be applicable to short video loop, in Boomerang Instagram style. Even here, someone had already thought of that, transforming the individual frames with the app and then mounting them to make videos. There was also talk of an algorithm that automatically tips the art style more suitable for a given photograph.

According to those Prisma Labs, such an instrument could represent a revolution, fraught with great consequences. They call themselves the first to use a neural network on smartphones and now expect further technological innovations on devices to make further progress. For example move their codes from expensive server and put all the computing power in the pockets of users.
