Audi: 40 years of five-cylinder – Panorama Car

Audi 5-cylinder is synonymous with performance, reliability and efficiency. The history of the engines that represented the technical vanguard of Ingolstadt hard to 40 years .



The 70s, the dawn of the 5-cylinder Audi

In 1976 he made his debut, on ‘ Audi 100 5E , the first 5-cylinder in the House of the Four Rings. In 1979 arrived, then the turbocharged version of the five-cylinder petrol engines with its 170 hp and 265 NM Torque guaranteed high performance and represented the top of the range with Audi 200 5T .

A year later, with the Audi Ur -Four were introduced more technological innovations that still improved the performance of this engine, as the intercooler and the permanent all-wheel drive, however, reaching the threshold of 200 CV power. For those years represented the top of sportsmanship in the Audi range.

In 1983, the flagship of the 5-cylinder Audi became the aluminum five cylinder newly designed cylinder head with four valves and power of 306 hp pushing the now legendary Sport quattro , then the most powerful car ever built by a German company for use on public roads. Taking a leap forward of six years, in 1989, at the Frankfurt Motor Show Audi presented the Audi 100 TDI scenery. The completely new, never seen until then on production car – was the five-cylinder turbo diesel engine 2.5-liter and 120 hp direct injection and fully electronic control.



And after the V6, returns the 5-cylinder

from the second half of the 90s the five cylinders were replaced by the new V6, but it is in 2009 that overwhelmingly return to the scene on board the ‘ Audi TT RS technologies such as the turbocharger and direct petrol injection. The Ingolstadt sports coupe in this case possessed impressive 340 hp thanks to this 2.5-liter engine that would then also arrived on the RS3 Sportback and RS Q3 . Today, 40 years later, the 2.5 TFSI of the new Audi TT RS well produces 294 kW (400 hp) and the international jury of automotive journalists has voted the Audi five-cylinder “Engine of the Year” seven consecutive times from 2010.
