Ticino Avo for Solar Impulse – RSI.ch Information

The company Solar Impulse 2 , the solar plane landed last night in Abu Dhabi after a round the world made with the sun as the only fuel, has literally been around the world. It is an adventure that will remain in the annals of aviation and which was also followed with interest in the Ticino canton precursor of solar mobility. In fact, exactly thirty years ago, to get back to the story, another type of vehicle, called Pegasus , grind the first few meters at the lakefront.

At the heart of the project carried out by the then Ticino Solar Vehicle Team was the engineer Mark Piffaretti , owner of the Protoscar , a company actively involved in the of electric cars and alternative energy for their locomotion. Piffaretti recalled how the PV at the time was a new technology and Ticino had installed the first system connected to the grid, at SUPSI Lugano-Trevano, to power a vehicle – it could be a car, but also a bus or boat.

The Ticino engineer has reported that among the prototype of Solar Impulse thirty years ago and yes there are similarities, but many differences as well as the inability to conceive of a vehicle equipped with photovoltaic panels. It’s simple, cheap and efficient exploit the solar panels of a building for modern food supply battery of a vehicle.
