The crossword puzzle is 100 years old Editing – It ‘s been a century since the first crossword puzzle was published in a newspaper. It was 21 December 1913 when the readers of the New York World were faced with a page of games in which he made his first appearance of a grid of numbered boxes in the shape of diamond that needed to be filled with letters that would form solutions to the proposed definitions.

Arthur Wynne , born in 1871 in Liverpool and emigrated to nineteen years in the U.S., had to prepare the game page Sunday where there were usually anagrams, riddles and puzzles of varying nature, however, he was requested to find something new.

Perhaps his inspiration from a crossword which some had already been made in Italy or maybe just taking a cue from the magic square preserved on a wall in Pompeii, Wynne gave birth to this new game which immediately found huge success and with the passage of time turned striving black squares and assuming a square or rectangular shape.
