The content of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has reached the quota symbol of 400 ppm (parts per million). A level that had never been reached by at least 3.2 million years, according to the analysis carried out in polar ice cores and marine sediments. The figure of 400.03 ppm – recorded on May 9 with the instruments placed on Mauna Loa volcano in Hawaii – is still preliminary according to the U.S. Agency of the atmosphere and oceans (NOAA), but it is just a matter of days . A similar instrument in San Diego has recorded 399.73 ppm, but the upward trend is constant.

CONSTANT INCREASE – When you are consistent and accurate records began in 1958, the atmospheric CO2 concentration was 316 ppm. The scientific evidence ensure that in the last 800,000 years were never exceeded 300 ppm. Since the industrial revolution, about 200 years ago, the concentration of carbon dioxide has increased constantly. For the totality of scientists around the world there is no doubt that this increase is related to human activities and that the increase in CO2 in the atmosphere is the number one cause of the increase in average global temperatures.
