CO2, Europe at a crossroads: green economy or industry support ... - Corriere della Sera

Station Hawaiian detection of CO2 at Mauna Loa

Into The news from the Hawaiian Islands has very little exotic: the local monitoring station reported that CO2 emissions into the atmosphere have touched the 400 ppm (parts per million). A round figure, which worries: seven thousand years ago, according to surveys on the Arctic ice, the Earth was at 90 ppm. In 1958, when I started to accurate measurements, the level was 316 ppm. I doubt that the cause of?? ™ increase and the resulting global warming is lâ?? ™ human activity are less and less. And although there are skeptics, for some years lâ?? ™ International Agency? ™ Energy (lâ?? ™ IEA, Paris) has determined that a scenario of  «stabilizzazione ‘emissions could be at an altitude of 450 ppm, limiting? ™ rising temperatures between 2 and 2.4 degrees and avoiding doomsday scenarios that lie ahead: drought, heat waves, inaridimenti, storms, rising sea levels. Well, lâ?? ™ EU has always been allâ? ™ on the front edge of the containment of CO2, adhering to Kyoto without hesitation, setting up a trading system as lâ?? ™ ETS (Emission Trading Scheme). And putting stringent constraints on emissions of its fleet (the 2020 limit of 95 grams of CO2 per kilometer which lâ?? ™ mainland industry is vehemently opposed). A few days ago, though, the European Parliament has changed direction, rejecting the proposal to delete a package of significant  «permissions inquinare”, a move that would have supported the price of one ton of CO2, from time to a minimum. Without a  «prezzo” of CO2 is unlikely that the objectives of containment (such as IEA) can be centered: no one would have an interest in not pollute . The reason for the  “Noa” is clear: European companies in crisis do not want to incur additional costs. All true, but so lâ?? ™ Europe is at a crossroads: bet on green economy and think long, or not to wei gh on its production system, but risk losing the train.
