ra 1956 when captain Neil Mc Eacharn – the founder of the botanical gardens of Villa Taranto Verbania – devised the “tulip Week”: the same as today (doubled) that after 60 years allows us to see the rare Giant orange sunset, the largest in the world with a diameter of 20 centimeters. As each spring the “Tulip Week ‘ – which actually lasts 16 days, until April 25 – makes the park on Lake Maggiore even more fascinating and colorful.
The tulip was planted more than a thousand years ago in the Ottoman Empire, arriving only in the sixteenth century in Europe. The flower has always been associated to the Netherlands, from where the tulips of Villa Taranto. In fact, 90% of Europe continues to be the Dutch market.
In Verbania the “labyrinth of tulips’ is made with 28,000 bulbs of 65 varieties that offer wonderful play of colors. It is a location to be carried away by color: the tulip Carnival de Nice is white with dark red border , the Micky Mouse yellow with red streaks, the Queen of Night is the rare black the Flaming Baltic has white petals with a deep burgundy flame and then there are the contrasts of Black & amp; White.
“This year the bloom is implemented by 30 000 muscari, difficult planting because as small as nails, creating a bluish outline very pleasing to the eye – says Roberto Ferrari, director of Ente Botanic Gardens -. Do not miss the black tulip, which is a rarity, and the “Giant orange sunset”, which is the biggest variety with a diameter that is at least 23 centimeters: the latter, a deep red hue, are already in full bloom and advice to see them as soon as possible to observe them in the midst of beauty. ”
Garden of sixteen hectares
In the park – 16 hectares purchased in 1931 by the Scottish captain – can be admired at the time also blooms of magnolias, rhododendrons, Forsythie, daffodils and violets in addition to the blue carpet of muscari . The novelty in 2016 are the “vertical gardens” in the greenhouse of Victoria Cruziana , example of green architecture. “Few gardens boast similar facilities – says Ferrari -. Vertical plant walls had big boost from the Expo, where the pavilions had more choices. ”
Here comes the technology
The other news is technological: an app for smartphones in Italian and English for guided tours of the park , with indication of the points of interest and outline their botanical species. Then there are the events confirmed the free tickets for Verbanese every first Sunday of the month and the “Flower apero” in July and August with tours in Italian, English, French and aperitif included.
