Check-up and free information sessions to prevent the leading cause of irreversible blindness. Part 8 March World Glaucoma Week, an initiative which is also joining the Italian Union of the Blind and Visually Impaired of Piedmont.
Data impressive those concerning the disease: 55 million people worldwide are affected by glaucoma and already 24 million of them have lost sight of the whole or in part. “It is estimated that only in Italy there are a million patients – says the president of the Piedmont dell’UICI, Adriano Chapter – the worst thing is that one in two people unaware of being affected by the disease, at great risk.”
From here the importance of prevention. Glaucoma, considered “the silent thief of sight”, can strike without giving any symptoms and, if untreated, causes narrowing of the visual field to the complete blindness in severe cases. That’s why, from 8 to 14 March, also the Italian Union of the blind and visually impaired adheres to the worldwide week of glaucoma, in collaboration with the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness.
