Let the sea with dolphins and dolphins at sea - The Daily

Into Last Thursday, on the occasion of the World Day against the captivity of marine mammals has kicked off an initiative of LVA and Marevivo to attract public attention to the conditions of the dolphins kept in captivity in Italy. But first, because a global day? The reason is simple: because of all the animals, marine mammals – such as cetaceans and pinnipeds that were born and evolved to live in a space without limits – are the ones who best exemplify the absurdity of life to confine wild animals in unnaturally tight spaces – solely for the purpose of profit .

Into In Italy there are five buildings that house dolphins in captivity (Fasano, Torvaianica, Riccione, Rimini and Genoa), none of which is non-profit ; Gardaland recently renounced the dolphins because of the policy anti-captivity of the new property, Merlin Entertainments . A Ipsos poll recently commissioned by the NGO French One Voice reveals that 68% of Italians are favorable to ‘ abolition of the captivity of dolphins in Italy : an encouraging demonstration of the sensitivity of our countrymen, which, however, has not yet resulted in a definitive change in management.

necessary to convince the remaining 32%. It is undeniable that keeping dolphins in a pool of chlorinated water loses justifiability of each passing day. The law requires that the dolphins must have a clear the educational and scientific , but this condition is not met, because the legislature did not bother to set criteria against which to evaluate education and science. In fact, only show is, for the most questionable taste. Of one thing we must, however, give credit to the legislature, and it is forbidden to have swimming with dolphins in the tank. This has at least put away the infamous fraud Dolphin Assisted Therapy (DAT), with which unscrupulous operators, taking the kids to swim with the dolphins, make profit on different levels of suffering (dolphins , autistic children and their families), in the absence of overt scientific basis for this practice.

Into So we must ask Italians to give up the exciting spectacle offered by the sight of dolphins swimming and jumping? Not necessarily. Our seas are still rich in various species of dolphins, and especially in Liguria There are organizations that offer the opportunity to observe during day trips . The greater commitment of time and cost required for such trips, albeit limited in absolute magnitude, is more than made up for dall’esaltante sense of freedom and beauty on time evoked by the sight of a group of striped dolphins who comes to jump ahead of the bow of the boat.

Into Within a framework of possible closure of the current dolphins, would remain the problem of dealing with the dolphins that are now in captivity. Release them into the sea after prolonged captivity, and now separated from their society of origin, without which they can not survive, would be tantamount to a sentence and as such is not an option. Here serve an interim solution, a sort of pensioner which ensures survival decent as possible until their end. Personally, I would consider an interesting “conversion on the road to Damascus” by some of the Italian structures mentioned above, that with a change of policy wanted to declare contrary to industry practice and the captivity , and available to offer a dignified and peaceful hospitality to the amazing animals that they have, to date, unlawfully exploited. I am given the ingenuous, but I am certain that the public would ultimately forgive them and reward them.
