Google's new project - Reuters

In Google Labs is working on “smart contact lenses” that can measure the levels of glucose in tears, providing help to people with diabetes and one reading per second.

Mountain View lets you know that the monitoring will be possible thanks to a tiny wireless chip and a miniature sensor, embedded between two layers of material that make up the lens.

The company is also testing the integration of tiny LED lights, which should light up to indicate if glucose levels exceeded certain thresholds.

However, testing to get a device ready for everyday use will take a long time: “It ‘still early days for this technology, but we have completed several clinical researches and studies are helping to refine our prototype,” they write in a blog post the two engineers in charge of the project, Babak Parviz and Brian Otis. “We hope that one day this product can offer people with diabetes a new way to manage the disease.”
