Google launches maxi-alliance with Audi, Honda, Hyundai, GM and ... - The Sole 24 Ore

LAS VEGAS

. The car is the new smartphone. Or rather, the new field of battle between Google and Apple. The Mountain View giant has just announced the Open automotive alliance. The name closely resembles what has been done by Google 7 years ago when after the arrival of the iPhone decided to make an open operating system, involving all producers under the name Open Handset Alliance. Ensued Android, today the undisputed market leader in terms of market share.

The new alliance brings together Google for the car, GM, Honda, Audi, Hyudai and the chipmaker Nvidia. The aim will be to bring Android infotainment systems “in a way built specifically for the car.” The first car born from the alliance will arrive in 2014. It could be an Audi, as the Wall Street Journal last week announced a chord among the Germans and Google.

At the moment the goal is to equip the operating system functions that can enable developers to build applications that can improve the digital experience inside the car. The initiative is already in contact with the Nationa Highways Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) so that the system inside the cars than the safety criteria.

Google is certainly not alone in trying to establish itself in the four wheels. Apple launched over a year ago an agreement with BMW, Mercedes, GM, Land Rover, Jaguar, Audi, Toyota, Honda and Chrysler to bring Siri to the edge of the car, while the well-known Ford’s Sync system is based on Microsoft technologies. At the moment seems to prevail a multi-platform approach by car manufacturers. A whole lot to follow.
