iOS 8: Metal revolutionize the mobile gaming – WebNews

Marco Grigis ,

Not only aesthetics and new features, from the stage of WWDC 2014 Apple announced also many technological innovations dedicated to developers. It seems that the Californian group has pulled the rabbit out of the cylinder with a feature that, as difficult to understand for the end user, will help iOS 8 to dominate the world of mobile gaming. We are talking about Metal , a system that just days before the launch already obtained the unanimous support from the developer: 3D processing power never before seen on a mobile device.

So as for all the goods with the bitten apple, the need for graphics software making use of the OpenGL libraries . The major limitation of the mobile platform, as well as the presence of processors and GPUs less powerful than laptops and desktops, however, is the implementation levels of these libraries, a fact which reduces performance. Simplifying to the maximum in order to facilitate understanding, including the capabilities of the chipset and the effective visualization of 3D effects you put a bunch of strings, codes and tasks that in fact limit the final yield, because the processor occupies part of its resources to other . With Metal iOS 8, however, this intermediate stage is completely eliminated, with performance 10 times higher than iOS 7 installed on the same hardware.

In other words, Metal reduces to a minimum the need for an interpreter to Us communications OpenGL libraries to the processor, thanks to an efficient multithreaded and customizable, pre-built shaders and direct integration at the level of A7 Chipset and later. All thanks to the experience of some big names in the industry such as Crytek, Epic, EA and Unity, which helped Apple this purpose.

The demo shown on stage at the Moscone West were truly amazing: in Specifically, Unity has revealed the possibility of iOS 8 in combination with Unreal Engine 4. Through the application Zen Garden, in the future, available on the App Store, it is revealed as Metal able to provide a real-time rendering never before seen on mobile platforms, with graphics not only treated in detail and to the fullest extent of anti-aliasing, but capable of giving specific processing time of the CPU to each element of the scene. So hundreds of fish in a pond become all equipped with artificial intelligence to respond to stimulation of the user. The same for thousands of butterflies, all autonomous in terms of processor resources, dealing with a rendering at higher FPS . A real revolution, ultimately, that will open a whole new world of possibilities on the iPhone and iPad for games that are more similar to those from home console.

As Time points out, however, will be a revolution in stages. Despite Metal, physical limitations to performance are still very high, so it is unlikely that in the short term the iPad and iPhone can match a console from the living room with a lot of professional GPU and CPU power from high-end desktop. Certainly, though, that you can get with Metal fees not today between rivals and mobile push more and more developers to prefer, if only for experimental purposes, the platform of Cupertino.
