8 iOS: Apple’s operating system more open than ever – Ridble

the WWDC this year has ended, and all lovers of technology are still debating – sometimes heatedly – the novelties presented by ‘ entourage Apple. The Cupertino company has proposed basically just software, including Yosemite OS X and iOS 8 ; the latter is the protagonist of our focus. The new release contains many new features, without shadow of a doubt – and among them a great set of APIs that reflect a new willingness to open up by Apple, while ensuring a high level of safety.

We are not faced with a real full revolution, at least if we consider the distributed product in itself. The developers, however, this year a number of new platforms that you can use to bring iOS in home automation in the field of health, sharing more open and much more. The whole is surrounded by the proposed new programming language Swift.

Anyone with a minimum of salt in the pumpkin perfectly understands the scope of two basic concepts, fundamental to be able to maintain a steady base of users who daily rely on iOS. The first is based on the focus in offering a unique user experience and hardly emulated; no matter what . I knew when Steve Jobs has distilled this idea – revolutionary at the time – a concept vital that permitted the shaping of DNA that gives life to every Apple product.

The second is based investing every resource to create products capable of moving masses and markets through the interaction of thousands of “no” for each “yes”, that distinguish the products made in Cupertino. iOS 8 – along with Mac OS X Yosemite – is just that: a slow passage through the folds of time, of a vision (for some insane) focused on the achievement of these two objectives. Obviously a key factor, deliberately omitted in this equation is played by R & D every year invests flower flowers of money to test and create new technologies in order to keep pace with the times and sometimes important to provide a technological advantage. Finished our preamble, let’s see in detail all the features and news of our new iOS 8 .

User Interface

As mentioned in the introduction, iOS 8 does not have a reversal chart important. In fact, if you want to be realistic, we can say that the new version of the operating system for Apple’s mobile devices presents a graphical interface more mature, motivated by their own shortcomings that appeared in iOS 7. Thus the Cupertino company has succeeded in two moves, to propose something very innovative in the first version and more polished in the second. But look at the entire UI and see what’s new.

Springboard

iOS 8

Announcements related to the Springboard are really very few. 8 iOS follows very much the graphic style chosen for iOS 7, offering applications with the same icons to which we have now done all (or almost all) the habit after one year. The structure remains basically the same: in portrait mode six rows of four icons occupy the home screen and the other pages. On the iPad, as usual, we have the opportunity to add two additional apps in the bottom dock master, reaching a maximum of 26 applications per screen.

The scrolling of the pages is the same as above, as l ‘ user experience . The thing is not to be considered a disadvantage, because now we made the call to radical choices and if we want more youth that Apple did last year. Same transitions for various tasks, perhaps boosted a bit ‘in the entrance into the folders. Are of course also in this edition, the parallax effect that, through a particular algorithm, can provide a three-dimensional icons – still rounded and visually quite flat – during the change in orientation of the device. This was slightly improved with greater fluidity.

Nothing special to report, at least for the moment. Would we have liked to see something more to fill large spaces offered on the iPad and iPad Air, as opposed to the iPhone and iPod Touch where the Springboard already seems to offer a good balance between content and ease of interaction.

Notification Center

class=”img_destra”> iOS 8 If the Springboard novelties are almost non-existent, we can not say the same for the Notification Center . This was overturned in iOS 7, and has generated some confusion among users for some choices of layout is not immediate for everyone. What do we find it again? Something more and something less.

access to the menu of notification is clearly the usual swipe from the top down to reveal the opaque curtain that’s going to put a watermark everything that is in the lower level, even in the Lockscreen. The menu contains notifications and widgets ; just for the latter there are significant new features, we’re going to explain shortly. The filters for notifications are no longer three, but Two : Today and Notifications. The third, “lost”, had generated an immense confusion, dictated mainly by the fact that if a notification is located within the dedicated center, it is assumed that whatever is in a sense “lost”. More order, more clarity, then.

Inside the filter “ Today ” We appreciate a series of widgets system within the preset dedicated settings. We do not necessarily get to the Settings app to be able to re-order, disable, or add, finally, at the bottom of the feed notification, we find the “Edit” button that allows you to tap, to vertically move the widgets and activate / deactivate them. This filter will find summaries of the current day, the next one, calendar, reminders, the bag and the weather, but it does not end here. Yes, because Apple has finally provided through the SDK, available to all developers, the API in order to achieve your own widgets content within their app. This means that maybe one day we can have a custom widget with your preferred weather service, the one with the results of their team sports and so forth. A new step towards the opening for the Cupertino company.

Inside the filter “ Notifications ” we find the actual notifications from applications, divided as usual for app that generates and with the option of manual or chronological. You can delete notifications for an app by tapping the “X” button next to the title of the place itself on the right or clear notifications individually via a swipe from right to left which will show the new entry “Close” – this is substantial part of the new iOS 8, interaction via swipe through lists.

iOS 8

The most interesting thing about the Notification Center, however, is different: interactive notifications . Yes, maybe it’s not really fair to associate the center itself, but with iOS 8 comes a new expectation for many users that allows, through the same notifications show up as usual via the pop-up banner on the top of the user interface, responding quickly to a content. This can be a message just received an invitation on the calendar, an email, a post on Facebook, a reminder or another, tapping on the notification we will interact with them without opening the dedicated app (finally).

Control Center, Lockscreen and Spotlight

Let’s move inside the Control Center . The new iPhone OS 8 does not include any news for this section of the UI; it looks like on iOS 7, with the same controls, the same icons and the same functionality. Present the classic toggle to turn on airplane mode, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and do not disturb the rotation lock, the controls for brightness and music management, activation and AirDrop AirPlay (AirPlay sessions) and keys for rapid activation of the torch, calling Clock, Calculator, and Camera.

The center relies course through the usual swipe from the bottom edge of the display to the top, and a small change is appreciable simply by adjusting the brightness , an operation that removes the layer obscured the Springboard to show the actual yield of this with the new brightness. A bit ‘disappointing? Yes, probably the ability to change the position of at least the upper toggle and customize them with other options would cheer many.

 iOS 8

The situation is similar for the Lockscreen , formally “lock screen”. Here, too, we have no substantial news: at the top we find the status bar further down the time and date, and further down, below, the phrase “slide to unlock”. This reminds us, as in iOS 7, you can make a swipe to the right to access the Springboard. The animation is the same release, while slightly changes the transition’s input Lockscreen which appears by making a slight zoom into the selected background for that. There is also a detail not yet very clear: in the lower right, via geolocation, Lockscreen may appear in the icon of an app – bottom left – on the place in which we find ourselves (for example, a Starbucks) to open its App or install it if it is not already on the device.

Changing a little ‘things instead Spotlight , the search system. This is callable as usual by making a swipe from the top down on the Springboard, even if the new version creates a real new level offset in the background, which appears opaque and watermark, such as the Center for notifications. Spotlight is able to search for it on the iTunes Store, App Store, and to find useful results such as restaurants, movie and nearby locations. The search is always maintained very lean and ready to provide relevant results immediately, even though iOS 8 beta 1 does not have the new fields of active research.

Keyboard

keyboard undoubtedly requires a larger space because of things we can about one thing so many. With iOS 8 Apple opens up in all respects to the developers, and it is confirmed by support the new operating system to third-party keyboards . If until now we could only enjoy alternative keyboards on Android, iOS 8 we will one day replace the system keyboard with an alternative – such as the famous SwiftKey, a product of anonymous software house already in development for iOS.

But it does not end here, because even the same keyboard system has been revised heavily based on what were the needs of users: in fact born QuickType , a sort of revised version In fact, with less touches, to write more words. How? Simply by using a special bar located directly above the classic layout of the keyboard within which appear the words that potential we want to insert as you type. When we start writing a word, this fact will populate words suggested, is to insert the word itself, and is to continue the sentence with other words.

iOS 8 This bar – which can be hidden with a long tap on it and a swipe down – is divided into three main blocks, that while typing usually play the role of “word inserted as is”, “word suggestion longer relevant” and “word suggestion secondary.” By placing a tap on the first usually have the opportunity to enter when typing the result that most closely matches the actual characters that we typed, while using the other we will focus on interesting algorithms that are able to calculate the position of the fingers and contextualize it in accordance with the speech. It is in fact interesting to note that, in addition to having a nature obviously based on the learning of user habits – and therefore also of the words – QuickType is able to compose phrases already at the base notes. Example: if we write “Who is the cause,” all the words that will be following in the space station, or one where you should find the most appropriate word, they are “the” “his” “evil” “crying” “if “” same. ” The thing is without a doubt interesting, even if a “self” would have been better and lets us understand that Apple has yet to work.

From the general point of view we can say that iOS plus 8 brings numerous new layouts for particular languages, such as Chinese and other oriental languages, or for the visually impaired. Finally, users in Asia – which are many, remember – will be available to the dedicated keypads easy to use. Detail of the facade but certainly more marginal is the new key instead present within our classic keyboard, which is what the Emoji . This button, marked with a true icon in the shape of smiley is activated if and only if we have, including our keyboards set, only one main language and the Emoji, in fact. Well, slightly more intuitive for younger users who until now to enter the famous smilies in messages had to refer to a key represented by a globe.

Experience Typing general has really been improved 7 compared to iOS, thanks to an improved recognition of touches. QuickType finally approaching users who type in a less convulsive, with precision and ease of use. Other big news will come from third-party developers.

Multitasking

There were those who expected so much about it, but in multitasking iOS 8 we find actually new so overwhelming. The special menu, containing all the running applications and recently launched, it was already upset with the arrival of iOS 7, presenting with a layout that contains both a preview of the app that opened their icons. The closing of the app has been confined to a swipe of the same upward, and the activation mode instead of the double pressing the home key.

iOS 8 What’s new? At the logic level, one simple thing: recent contacts and favorite places on top of open applications . By activating the multitasking we can in fact now be seen, as well as icons and previews of the app running (or recently, the mechanism of memory storage process is the same as the other OS), including a list of contacts to be reached quickly. These are offered through a horizontal grid to scroll, and present with a circular avatar (the same that we find now for all contacts within iOS) and the name of the person. Unfortunately it is not possible to change this list, and perhaps its presence in an area of very little system associated to the contacts makes the feature a little ‘”out of place “. Tapping on a contact you can reach four keys to quickly make a call, send us a message and initiate a FaceTime session, classic or just audio.

There are, unfortunately, not in this release the ability to close applications by an indicator “X” for each preview – What’s happening now instead of Windows Phone – and even some sort of function to close all open applications, or just the recent ones and no longer in memory (or vice versa ). Everything remains quite classic short, the contact list in the upper part.

Siri

class=”img_destra”> iOS 8 Finally Apple begins to get serious with Siri . While we have the opportunity – anticipated by several rumor – to discover that we are listening to the song through the integration of Shazam inside voice assistant , on the other hand, you can activate the mode listening simply by saying “Hey , Siri “. Although this feature appears very similar to that proposed by the Moto X with Google Now, responds to a specific request you can call the application without touching the device.

How is expressly mentioned, however, within the Settings for Siri, the latest features in character “always on” or “always listening” is activated only when the device is charging . The reason is simple: iOS devices have big effort to save battery (mainly iPhone), let alone with a function that puts the device always listening. “Hey, Siri,” however, is perfectly matched to CarPlay platform introduced by Apple with the release of iOS 7 that sees major automotive brands as partners. One more point for our safety at the wheel, a plus point for Siri that is becoming increasingly a true personal assistant. Support offline? Not even the shadow , for the moment, but at least now the dictation is done so step-by-step guide for each word heard and recognized, potentially providing answers much faster than before.

Applications

No

complete redesign of the applications of this system in iOS 8 , but only improvements dictated by those who were present in the various discomforts of different products in stock to serve ‘ inside the operating system. Apple has focused primarily on some of the most used applications, and now we’re going to see in detail how.

Posts

class=”img_sinistra”> iOS 8 Good news for the application Posts in the new iOS 8 which going to get a little ‘to the now well-known client of competition that have taken over the share of use of the various platforms massaging. Apple adds the ability to record audio messages directly “on-the-go” using the appropriate button in the lower right corner in the classic interface of the app. Holding down the button will start the recording of the clip, and, with a swipe to the left, sending will be canceled, while using a swipe upwards this will be confirmed. Plus the added multiple conversations , another well-known features of other clients. Through these you can talk to multiple people at once.

It does not end here. Same concept for audio messages is proposed for the selfie . By making a simple tap on the camera button on the left side you can choose a photo in this film, even skimming previews displayed without actually access the film in full screen, or take pictures or video . The feature is unfortunately not present on the iPad.

also available plus new features accessible within the “Details” button in the upper right. Here we obviously can quickly access the call and FaceTime session with the contact, but also share your location, enable the “Do Not Disturb” specifically to the conversation, and view all your media files attached to the conversation. By default, the app saves only those received, but you can also add your own, one by one, using the “Retain” Available in all its Annex. The conservation of the various messages can moreover be adjusted by using the Settings option within the criteria “Always,” “30 Days” and “1 year.” The app is finally more complete.

Safari

class=”img_destra”> iOS 8 We know that Apple is focusing on Safari , which is year by year continually updated and improved in many ways. This year is no exception. With iOS 8, Safari gets important improvements that make it faster and leaner. From the graphical point of view we are faced with a remake of the browser that makes it devoid of frills or items that could become a distraction. In fact, 8 of iOS that stands out the most is the content of the web page and not the graphics application. There is also the possibility, on the iPhone and iPod Touch (on the iPad is a rare thing), go from one site to mobile mode to desktop mode to see the full versions of websites (For finally. do not you have to do is make a tap on the barr a address and scroll the same.

It was introduced the possibility of being able to start, the whole area “cards open, “a private session that allows us to navigate, tab to tab, without having to worry about our privacy policy. Indeed, as happens for example using Google Chome, everything we do in the private session will be automatically deleted once the session will be terminated. always about privacy for the first time Apple has introduced the ability to choose as the default search engine DuckDuck Go , although it may seem like a trivial piece of news for a few, it is not at Whereas DuckDuck Go was founded with the philosophy of providing a reliable service but free from prying eyes. There is also an interesting mode of data acquisition cards (credit card number, expiration date) via the camera: a site with proper form will be acknowledged via Safari can now capture on the fly your credit card physics to extrapolate data on the fly and auto-complete the fields.

Last treat for most nerds: The engine that allows Safari to be so responsive, Nitro Jascript is now also available for third-party browsers. This means that users fond of Google Chrome, once updated the app, will no longer see their experience greatly limited in comparison to that offered by Safari.

App Store and iTunes Store

News for the application App Store , which now incorporates a search function developed vertically and with infinite loading of the results and a new item called “Create” through which you can access to individual pages dedicated to each category. There is also, via the menu on the top right of the page – even in the app from the iTunes Store – in addition to wishlist two new items, Siri and Previews. The first will contain all songs tagged with the recognition function of the songs interfaced with Shazam, the second is not yet clear what we will have available, although these are likely to be provided to the app during the beta testing, the software house (if you were attending to a beta program). We will see shortly in the App Store also also preview video for each app – new possibilities provided by Apple with its iOS 8.

Camera and Images

iOS 8

The Camera , which we know to be one of the highlights of the iPhone, has been slightly modified by the ‘ addition of time-lapse on all devices, exposure adjustment detached from the focus with a simple swipe on the indicator located right on the point of focus, and the timer. This, notably absent until iOS 7, has two types of countdown, respectively, from 3 to 10 seconds, after which the camera will take the picture. Undoubted usefulness in self-portraits in the distance. On the iPad was instead added the ability to take panoramic pictures and time-lapse. Although I do not feel at all comfortable in taking pictures with my iPad, these small additions should make life easier for all those that love it, for some absurd reason, do it. The menu of the app becomes more enriched, but the basic principle is always the same: side-scrolling modes.

The application Images now allows cataloging much more simple and practical than this on iOS 7. Thanks to the work carried out in tandem with iCloud Photo Library , every shot is automatically shared with all devices, thus making them accessible at all times. Furthermore, the application can straighten out the best photo editor and also has a much more complete that allows us a more immediate tuning of the shots. The editor can be accessed by tapping on the “Edit” heading at the top right of each photo in the preview, and using the key on the bottom bar marked by a small knob. Here we can choose various parameters of light and color to increment / decrement to make our photos more optimized as possible. Even in this case, each change is synchronized with all devices. There is also a small button with an icon of a heart open to every picture; This will add the picture in your collection favorites. Although limited, it is also added a feature to hide photos in the roll within moments, Collections and years, but not in albums.

Health

iOS 8 New OS, new application. With iOS 8 is the turn of Health, or better Health application developed by Apple that now numerous rumors had anticipated, although proposing names and thumbnail images quite wrong. Apple marries the trend of sports and health, providing a full set of APIs – all’HomeKit in parallel with the development of features on iOS-based home automation – you can use hardware to cooperate, and then smartwatch smartband with iPhone. The app is not available on the iPad, probably because it was considered at the time an extremely personal use in extreme mobility. What is? Simple. Health is able to create detailed reports with a large number of variables, ranging from those for the fitness (fat mass, weight, calorie counting, etc.). Those for blood for the use of drugs, nutrition and sleep . The various categories can be browsed through the menu “My Health”, or “My Health”, and used for manual entry of the various values that will populate a diagram then dedicated and who will occupy, through the activation of a ‘ special option – Show on Dashboard – a position in the first menu of the app; Dashboard fact.

In addition, we have a menu called Medical ID This will be used to populate a specific form of emergency also available without unlocking the phone, via the menu to emergency calls in order to see any allergies or particular pathologies in cases of unconsciousness. Obviously the details will be useful for example to doctors who take charge of the care of the owner of the iPhone. The solution, though it may seem trivial, it could become a standard for all future devices. There is also a fourth menu in which we can interact with the app compatible with the new platform.
