Into Ford will work with Schaeffler and other partners in a research project which also includes the production of two vehicles already in use by 2015.
This technology could eventually allow the development of a car for four people that would occupy only the space of a two-seater today. There would in fact need to have the engine compartment – a remarkable innovation that could reduce congestion and the chronic lack of parking of the city.
With the motors directly in the wheels, components required for acceleration and deceleration are installed directly into the hub with integrated drive – and includes the electric motor and brake systems and cooling systems.
Into “This highly integrated system allows you to rethink the supermini with far fewer restrictions, and could in the future be a key factor for the development of new vehicle concepts and revolutionary car platforms,” ??said Peter Gutzmer, technical director at Schaeffler.
Into Ford has joined the project led by Schaeffler, Germany’s leading manufacturer of automotive components, to study future zero-emission vehicles with more space for features such as protected areas for passengers.
