ROME – In the constellation Lyra, two thousand light years from Earth, there are two look-alike of our planet and could harbor liquid water. They are the most Earth-like planets ever discovered and the first of this size found in the so-called habitable zone, where the distance from the star makes possible the presence of liquid water and the formation of life. The discovery, announced in the journal Science, is based on data from the Kepler space telescope due to the group led by the American William Borucki of NASA’s Ames Research Center. “The result shows that Earth-like planets exist and that it is worth continuing to conduct this kind of research, “says astronomer Raffaele Gratton, of the Observatory of Padua National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF). The ultimate goal of this research, says Gratton, is whether there are chances that these systems harboring life and maybe find the evidence. The two planets lo ok-alike of the Earth are the most external of a system of five worlds extrasolar was born around the star Kepler-62, which resembles the Sun and is between 2,000 and 3,000 light years from us. Called Kepler-62e and Kepler-62f, have radii respectively equal to 1.61 and 1.41 times the radius of Earth. The other three planets of the solar system itself have radii equal to 0.54, 1.31 and 1.95 Earth radii, but they are too close to their star to have water. All were discovered thanks to technique of transits , which analyzes the fluctuations in the brightness of a star when a planet passes in front, partially eclissandola. The two planets receive a stream of light from the star similar to what we receive from the Sun, Venus and Mars, and this suggests that they can accommodate an atmosphere and liquid water. Based on simulations, the researchers suggest that both planets may be solid, with a rocky or icy composition. “A rocky plan et with an atmosphere and surrounded by rivers and seas on its surface would be a Holy Grail for extrasolar planetary science,” writes Science commenting on the discovery. On the basis of the size and distance from the star, The researchers calculate that the two planets could have a ‘ atmosphere with nitrogen, carbon dioxide and water. But you can not have more accurate data on planets so far away.
