BMW’s technological innovations – Automania

BMW decided to invest heavily in plant technology of production and announces the birth of a pilot plant in Monaco. The system is fully integrated with highly sophisticated optical measuring cell, which relate to free-arm robots in order to create a three dimensional image of the entire vehicle and generate a 3D data model from the captured data, with a margin of error less than 100 micron . BMW declares to be the first manufacturer of automobiles in the world using this technology.

The use of this system will allow even more efficient and precise manage the transition from digital models and physical tests. The entire project is part of the digitization strategy of the BMW Group for the production and supports the high quality standards for the production of premium vehicles. The next generation of the BMW 5 Series will be the first to benefit from this new technology.

Eduard Obst , Head of geometric analysis, measurement technology and Cubing BMW, explains: “We are pleased to reach this real goal of pre-production technique. With this new optical measuring cell we will be able to realize a 3D data model of the total vehicle, eliminating, in fact, the many hours spent to accomplish the individual measurements and collection of geometric data. “

A great advantage is also that you can prevent known defects of the first productions that much damage the image of a builder, especially that this is proposed as excellence in quality and reliability. After the tests that will be done with the new BMW 5 Series, the BMW’s intentions are to extend the benefits of this system on all future cars of the brand.
