A few days both next-generation console, the Xbox One to the PlayStation 4, have officially debuted in stores. But how to navigate if you are uncertain which one to buy? Let’s try to summarize briefly their characteristics.
It is two consoles in some ways quite similar. In fact, both have excellent potential: games, at least for now, have a very satisfactory resolution to 1080p. The Xbox One also comes to have, in the exclusive titles, a frame rate of 60 frames per second, which has a positive effect on the fluidity (very noticeable in “Ryse: Son of Rome” and “Forza Motorsport 5″). But even the 30 fps of the Ps4 defend well. In short, there is a difference, but it is not substantial. Controller What the PlayStation 4 is much improved over its predecessor, and in comparison to that of the Xbox One has introduced more innovations (just think of the motion sensor, the light bar and the touchpad control panel). But Microsoft, which already started from good base pad of the Xbox 360, has further improved its controller, introducing four motors for vibration and making it even more comfortable and easy to handle. Form (and substance) Neither console is aesthetically outstanding, indeed. Undoubtedly, however, the Ps4 has a more elegant and understated, while the Xbox One looks massive and too boxy. But it is not just a matter of appearance. The Microsoft console is “heavier” even inside: it has three operating systems (one for games, one for tv and other activities, one to pass from the first to the second), while the PlayStation 4 has only one. The Xbox is more “complex”, but offers more features. The two have a hardware console is very similar, so the power is more or less the same. Exclusive From the point of view of the exclusive, Microsoft has deployed heavy artillery: “Ryse: Son of Rome”, “Forza Motorsport 5″ and “Dead Rising 3″ have had very good feedback. Sony on the other side responds with “Killzone: Shadow Fall” and “Knack”, less acclaimed. Is there anyway to say that the exclusive say little on the actual success of a console: a lot will depend on the capacity of the houses of development to exploit the potential of the new consoles. Just think, for example, that “Call of Duty Ghosts” runs better on Ps4. Price One of the deepest differences (and perhaps decisive) covers the cost. The Xbox One is sold at € 499, while the Ps4 to 399 Euros, or 100 Euros less. The original package of the Xbox One, however, also includes the Kinect, which is used to control voice and gestures to the console, the PlayStation while the camera is sold separately (about 60 Euros). In exchange, the controller of the Xbox One is powered by AA batteries, and rechargeable battery (“serial” in Ps4), almost essential, you must buy into the “Play and charge kit.” To play online, you will need in any case a subscription, which costs € 49.99 for the Ps4 and 60 Euros for the Xbox One. However, the real difference is in the so-called “mission”. On one hand, Microsoft has thought of a console for the whole family, a true “media center” to which you can also connect the TV decoder, while the console from Sony is especially dedicated to video games. One major problem is that neither console is backward compatible, which means that the games for the Xbox 360 and the PS3 will be unusable. And the price for gaming output lurks around 60-70 Euros.
The fact remains that just buy a console output is still a gamble, and those who accept the challenge becomes a sort of “guinea pig “. It is quite normal that the first samples of the latest technologies can have defects which will be resolved only in later versions. So to make a choice today, however, have to follow your instincts. And in the meantime, open your wallet.
