Maker Faire, invent to grow: the revolution of the young smart – The Messenger

Do not call it only “fair”. Call it rather “revolution”. Arrives in Rome, for the third consecutive year, one of the largest and most important gatherings dedicated to innovation in Europe: Maker Faire. Three days, October 16 to 18, in which the spaces of the Campus of Wisdom will be literally invaded by more than six hundred stands of technological inventions ranging from medicine to music. A festival dedicated to the free sharing of ideas, where the project of one can be taken up and improved by someone else, according to the philosophy of “open source”.

“People who solve problems”: as defined seem a bit ‘ simplistic, but the formula used by so-called Makers to describe hides a whole world. A world that could even be the future of the economy and that in Italy its European headquarters since the journalist Riccardo Luna, along with co-founder Massimo Banzi of Arduino and the general manager of Asset Chamber Massimiliano Colella have decided to bet on a phenomenon almost unknown in Italy but already widely used: the Fablab.

THE PHENOMENON

It is spontaneous workshops where children come together to create and share their technological ideas. Places that initially had above all a social function but that over time have also taken an important economic dimension, thanks to the Maker Faire, has valued them. In Italy today there are about a hundred, more than in any other European country (France is second with 58 laboratories). Worldwide, only the United States, where they were born, there is a higher number. So just as in New York there is a fair bigger than that of Rome, which in fact it has earned the title of European Maker Faire. “The FabLab and makers are the most beautiful response of young people in crisis,” says Coleman. A driving force that in just three years has drawn the attention of the big companies, which today are in these young people really interesting resources. It is no coincidence that the Maker Faire this year are also present the “big” industry such as Intel, Eni, Acea, Microsoft and Google.

“This is the year of maturation” He tells the Messenger TV Alessandro Ranellucci, 30 year-old architect who developed Slic3r, a platform that collects models for 3D printers, “if in the last year we have seen many ideas, those ideas today have turned into businesses, projects and opportunities.” And among these, says Luna, editor of Maker Faire and Digital Champion Italian, “there will be a world premiere, the world’s largest 3D printer. It was designed by Massimo Moretti with the order to “print” the houses destined to poor countries. ” But then the question arises: there will be the risk that the free spirit of the Maker Faire is swallowed up by the big traditional industry? “No, indeed,” he says convinced Colella, ‘companies seek to collaborate. There is great desire to reciprocity, to break down every fence. ” It is clear therefore that Maker Faire is also an economic opportunity, for Italy and for Rome. As emphasized Banzi, “It is important that the city of Rome take forward this event, which takes as an important part of their lives.”

“We are the capital of the country and we lose the head of the economy Italian, “insists Lorenzo Tagliavanti, President of the Chamber of Commerce of Rome. In short, says Luna, “We want to make it clear to those who will come to Rome is the capital of innovation and not the city of the degradation we keep hearing about.”

THE LOCATION

Several novelties of this third edition. Starting with the location, the university. As if to underline that this time the makers are in what should be their natural habitat, the cradle of the search, where it is forming young minds. “This event is an investment,” says the rector of Sapienza Eugenio Gaudio, “to educate young people and the commitment to innovation in the technological culture: the only way to lead the country out of the doldrums in which it is driven.”

The Wisdom will offer an area of over 100,000 square meters, where you will find space also a huge aviary 22 meters high where they can move freely drones, small remote-controlled aircraft that represent a technological innovation which the research He is focusing more. There will also be an area dedicated to the makers of music, Music Maker precisely, they will be developed musical instruments and will perform various “musicians 2.0″. And do not forget the Kids Area. Why Makers, if not born, we grow.
